According to the National Retail Federation’s Thanksgiving Weekend Survey, conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, more than 151 million people shopped in stores and/or online over the weekend. The average spending per person totaled $299.60. A large number of consumers shopped at both physical stores and online, although more customers --103 million--shopped online while 102 million made the trip to a bricks-and-mortar stores.
“Holiday shopping started well in advance of Thanksgiving weekend their year, but there’s no question that people were still incredibly eager to get their hands on the deals that retailers were offering,” said Pam Goodfellow, principal analyst for Prosper.
Of those who shopped in stores over the weekend, 72.8% (or 74.2 million people) shopped on Black Friday, the biggest day of the weekend. Another 46.8 million (or 45.9%) shopped on Small Business Saturday, while 34.7 million people (or 34%) shopped on Thanksgiving Day.
More than half of those who purchased gifts bought clothing, while 31.9% bought books, DVDs, and videos/video games.
NRF's Cyber Monday Expectations Survey, also conducted by Prosper, anticipates that 121 million shoppers will shop online on Cyber Monday.
