The Bookstore in Lenox, Mass., Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary Under One Owner: Matthew Tannenbaum, who bought the store four decades ago, likes to say that the bookstore and its Get Lit wine bar has served the community under his ownership for 2,035 Tuesdays. The store is celebrating today with an open mic with local writers and musicians and refreshments. This also marks another milestone, Tannenbaum turns 70 next week.
Bookateria Paperback Book Exchange in Ogden, Utah, to Close: At the end of April, the used paperback bookstore will close after 44 years. Owner Clarence Socwell, 86, said that it is time to call it quits.
UBS in Seattle to Close South Campus Location: On April 20, the Health Sciences Book Store in the South Campus Center at the University of Washington will close its doors and relocate its products and services to the main bookstore.
Obituary: Bookseller Karen Beem: The former owner of Newtown Bookshop in Newtown, Pa., died on March 30. Beem began her bookselling career at Booktender’s Secret Garden in Doylestown, before opening the bookshop with her husband, Perry, which they sold in 2006. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 301 N. Main St., Doylestown, Pa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. James School in Philadelphia.
