UConn to Sign with B&N: On Wednesday University of Connecticut trustees are expected to approve a proposed contract that would bring a Barnes & Noble bookstore to downtown Hartford by fall 2017, a decade after the last downtown bookstore closed. It also covers locations in Storrs and on regional campuses.
New Owner for Seattle’s Open Books: Avid customer Billie Swift is purchasing the “poem emporium” at the end of August, but will begin working in the bookstore now.
June Opening for HugoBooks’s New Store in Beverly, Mass: After a year-long delay due to problems with the building, Cabot Street Books and Cards, the fourth bookstore owned by father and son, Bob and John Hugo, will soon be ready to move in next to the Atomic Cafe, which also delayed its opening.
New Location for NYC’s “Speakeasy” Bookstore: Brazenhead Books, a bookstore located in a private apartment, has a new, semi-undisclosed location in Midtown after owner Michael Seidenberg was forced to move from the Upper East Side.
Chester County Book Company to Close in July: Three years after downsizing the bookstore at a new location, owner Kathy Simoneaux has decided to retire after considering “the difficult” bookstore market. For the next two months she is planning business as usual.
Books-a-Million Closed Vero Beach Location: After 16 years, the nation’s number two bookstore chain closed its 16,500 sq. ft. store at Ryanwood Square.
