Deep Vellum Readies for Grand Opening: Deep Vellum Books, the bookstore connected to the eponymous Dallas small press, had a soft opening last fall. Founder Will Evans put out a call for a partner to turn the store into a full-fledged bookstore. Now that Anne Hollander has responded and is stepping into the role of cofounder, the grand opening is expected soon.
Water Damage at Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar: A break-in and small suspicious fire set off water sprinklers, which damaged between 2,000 and 3,000 books, forced the weekend closure of an Asheville, N.C., bookstore. Owner Thomas Wright estimated that cleanup and lost business will cost $50,000.
BAM to Raise Money for Flood Damaged Libraries in West Virginia: On Saturday, July 16, Books-A-Million will donate to 20 percent of sales at all ten West Virginia store locations to the West Virginia Library Commission for the refurbishment and replenishment of libraries in Clendenin and Rainelle that were destroyed in flooding. Kickstarter Campaign for LGBTQIA Bookstore: University of Denver grads sold books at a booth at Denver PrideFest, then launched feminist/queer balanbooks online. Now they are looking for $15,000 in crowdfunding to turn it into a bricks-and-mortar bookstore and vegan cafe.
