Last June, the fate of Three Lives & Company, the beloved bookstore in New York City’s West Village, seemed uncertain. In a letter to customers, owner Toby Cox announced that the building housing the store was for sale and that the building's owner had not renewed the store’s lease.
Since then, Cox has been been renting the space on a month-to-month basis.
On Monday, reports surfaced that the sale of the Three Lives building, at 154 West 10th Street, has been completed.
Based on papers filed with the New York City Department of Finance, it seems unlikely that the bookstore will be allowed to stay at its current location. The buyer, Oliver’s Company, paid $14 million for the building, $4 million above the asking price.
When Cox announced that the store might have to leave its home of the past 33 years, he said that if the building's buyer doesn't offer a lease, the store will seek a new home.
Two other stores in the Village have moved in recent years. Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks has thrived in its new location, while St. Mark’s Bookshop ran into financial trouble around its move and closed in February.
