Crowning Achievement
Debuting at #8 in Hardcover Fiction, The Painted Queen is the 20th and final novel in Elizabeth Peters’s Amelia Peabody historical mystery series, about an Egyptologist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Peters was a pen name of author Barbara Mertz, who died in 2013. Mertz, an Egyptologist like her protagonist, wrote several mystery series and was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1998. When she died, she left behind a partial manuscript for The Painted Queen; her longtime friend and fellow mystery writer Joan Hess completed it.
