In a first for the country’s regional bookseller associations, all eight are hosting a national event to mark the start of the fall trade show season. Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver the opening keynote and will discuss his new book, Rise Up: Confronting a Country at the Crossroads (Hanover Square, Sept.), on September 15.
Rev. Sharpton will be in conversation with Ramunda Lark Young of MahoganyBooks in Washington, D.C. via Zoom. He will take questions from attendees. The host of MSNBC’s PoliticsNation and the syndicated radio show “Keepin’ It Real,” Rev. Sharpton is the founder and president of the National Action Network.
In Rise Up, Rev. Sharpton revisits the Obama administration, the 2016 election, and Trump’s subsequent hold on the GOP. He also amplifies the new voices and movements that have emerged in response to the Trump presidency. In its review, PW called the book an “impassioned survey of contemporary American politics.” The review added that “Sharpton makes a persuasive case that America has reached ‘a historical turning point that’s testing our moral character and endangering all we have fought to gain.’”
Access to the talk will be limited to association bookseller members.
