The Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation announced that, due to a matching gift challenge of $15,000 from Penguin Random House, the charitable organization has raised over $75,000 toward its campaign goal of $100,000. To raise the remaining $25,000 in the matching program, Libro.fm will give donors who contribute $100 to $499 with a 1-month Libro.fm gift membership; those who give $500 or more will receive a 3-month Libro.fm gift membership. The offer continues through December 31.
Binc also reported that it still needs $200,000 by December 31, 2021 to meet its annual fundraising goal. “We know the pandemic has put pressure on many people, and we don’t make this ask lightly,” said Binc’s executive director Pam French in a statement. “Making a gift will strengthen the book and comic industry’s safety net so those struggling to navigate these challenging times have a place to call for help. Gifts of all amounts are valued and important, and we thank everyone who has given so far.”
Binc receives an average of eight to 10 calls a week from bookstore and comic shop employees and owners looking for help. The average grant of $2,100 can stabilize a household, leaving a lasting impact on the recipient and their family that lasts for years.
