Another big week of sales for Spare by Prince Harry was enough to lift unit sales of print books 1.2% last week over the week ended January 22, 2022. The memoir sold more than 195,000 copies at outlets that report to NPD BookScan, easily making it the top-selling title last week.
The strong performance of Spare combined with good debuts by two other titles to inch up sales in the adult nonfiction category by 0.2%. The Creative Act by Rick Rubin sold over 36,000 copies in its first week, landing it in second place on the category list, while Straight Shooter by Stephen A. Smith sold more than 21,000 copies, putting it in fourth place.
Sales in the adult fiction segment rose 4.7% over the comparable week in 2022. Books by Colleen Hoover occupied the first three spots on the category list, selling a combined total of about 122,000 copies. Douglas Preston and Lee Child’s new release, The Cabinet of D. Leng, was in the fourth spot, selling more than 22,000 copies.
Sales in the young adult segment rose 3.9%. Holly Jackson had two books among the category’s top 10 bestsellers including the #1 title, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which sold over 12,000 copies.
Juvenile fiction sales slipped 0.8% last week while juvenile nonfiction sales dropped 6.4%. Little Blue Truck’s Valentine by Alice Schertle was #1 in fiction, selling more than 22,000 copies. The juvenile nonfiction list was topped by two books by Deborah Hopkinson, My Little Golden Book About Dolly Parton and My Little Golden Book About Betty White, which each sold over 4,600 copies.
