Sixteen Vermont members of the New England Independent Bookstore Association (NEIBA), as well as a small local publisher, are running a one-day fundraiser tomorrow, July 29 to support the reconstruction and reopening of Bear Pond Books of Montpelier and Next Chapter Bookstore of Barre, both of which were heavily damaged in flooding earlier this month.
Dubbed “Bookstores Helping Bookstores,” proceeds from tomorrow's sales will go to the bookstores listed below. In addition, the Montpelier–based Rootstock Publishing is donating sales from books purchased on their website between July 18 and August 18th.
The participating bookstores include:
- Bartleby’s Books, Wilmington
- Bear Pond Books, Stowe
- Bennington Bookshop, Bennington
- The Book Nook, Ludlow
- The Bookstore, Brandon
- Bridgeside Books, Waterbury
- Eloquent Page, St. Albans
- Everyone’s Books, Brattleboro
- Flying Pig Bookstore, Shelburne
- Phoenix Books, Burlington
- Phoenix Books, Essex

In addition, Books of Wonder in New York City is selling lightly used fixtures from its now-closed store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan to Bear Pond Books. The fixtures, from Franklin Fixtures, come with a warranty and are being offered at approximately half retail price. The now-shuttered Books of Wonder location was open for only two-and-a-half years, so the fixtures are still in “really in beautiful condition," said Peter Glassman, owner of Books of Wonder. He added that Bear Pond did not buy all the fixtures, so additional ones are still for sale.
