The release of the second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime gave a small sales boost to the Jenny Han novels that the series is based on last week, but that was not nearly enough to offset declines in all other categories. As a result, unit sales of print books fell 7.1% last week from the comparable week in 2022 at outlets that report to Circana BookScan.
Fiction had a particularly tough week, with adult fiction sales down 10% and juvenile fiction falling 12%. In adult fiction, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros stayed in the top spot, selling over 25,000 copies. Last year as this time, nine titles sold more than 25,000 copies, with Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen, Volume 17 in the ninth spot, selling nearly 30,000 copies. Last week, the 20th Jujutsu volume was the top-selling new release, selling over 18,000 copies.
In juvenile fiction, the only book released in 2023 that was among the category’s top 20 titles was Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea, which was in second place, selling just over 11,000 copies. The bestselling new title was Bluey: Fun and Games, which sold over 5,000 copies
With four Han titles among the top 10 young adult fiction bestsellers, sales inched up 0.3%, with The Summer I Turned Pretty on top, selling just over 18,000 copies. In total, Han’s four books sold more than 53,000 copies.
Adult nonfiction sales fell 6.2%. Atomic Habits by James Clear stayed in the category’s top spot, selling more than 19,000 copies. Greg Harden's Stay Sane in an Insane World was the best performing new title, selling over 9,000 copies.
