Canadian cartoonists Sam Alden and Ohara Hale will be signing their new books, It Never Happened (Uncivilized Books) and Moderne Luv (Rayray Books), at Drawn & QUarterly Bookstore in Montreal, Quebec. It Never Happened contains two stories, "Hawaii" and "Anime," told in Alden's loose and affecting style. Moderne Luv plays with themes like intimacy and personal experience with a minimalist and whimsical flair. This event is free to the public. 6/12-6/14: Oslo Comics Expo in Oslo, Norway
It's an entire weekend dedicated to comics at the Oslo Comic Expo, taking place June 12-14 at the Deichmanske Bibliotek on Schous Plass 10 in Oslo, Norway. Since 2007, OCX has focused on bringing professionals and fans together, as well as showcasing international and local talents. Programming includes artist spotlights, workshops, presentations, Q&As, discussions, exhibitions, and marketplace, as well as a number of events at satellite locations. Denver Comic Con, one of the country's fastest growing conventions is taking place from June 13-15 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. The show brings together comics, gaming, pop culture and more, and puts a particular emphasis on education, with proceeds benefitting the Comic Book Classroom non-profit. New York Comic Fest, a one-day convention from the organizers of Asbury Park Comicon, is being held on Saturday, June 14 from 10am-6pm at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York. Described as a "throwback" convention, NYCF is a smaller-scale show that focuses solely on comic books, creators, vendors and fans. Panels include "Batman at 75: Then and Now," "Social Issues Through Comic Books," "Marvel Days," and "A Tribute to Wally Wood." Guests include Bob Camp, Paul Levitz, Ann Nocenti, Denny O'Neil, Evan Dorkin, Jim Steranko, Scott Snyder, Mark Waid, Nick Bertozzi, Bill Sienkiewicz, Dean Haspiel, Paul Kupperberg and Jay Lynch. The first ever Special Edition NYC is taking place on June 14 and 15 at the Javits Center North in New York City, New York. The new annual event will is about just comics, from mainstream to alternative to international and web, and their creators. Programming includes panels such as "Secret Identities: Transgender Themes in Comic Books," "Sexy, Strange and Silly: Lost Superheroes of the Golden Age," and "Creator-owned Comics (vs. Corporate-owned Comics)," workshops, artist and publisher spotlights, and more.
