New York University's Fales Library has acquired the Michael and Ariane Batterberry's Food Arts magazine book collection, which consists of nearly 3500 titles, including a complete set of the magazine and about 15 linear feet of archival materials.
The Batterberrys, who also founded Food and Wine magazine in 1978, created Food Arts, a trade publication for culinary professionals, in 1988. The magazine was acquired by M. Shanken Communications the following year. Michael Batterberry stayed on as editor in chief until his death in 2010, the year the couple was awarded the James Beard Foundation Award for lifetime achievement, and Ariane Batterberry continued as publisher. In September 2014, M. Shanken announced it would be shuttering the magazine.
“Food Arts magazine was geared for professionals working in the food industry,” said Marvin J. Taylor of Fales Library. “The upcoming trends in food and food culture played out first in its page. It was beloved by chefs and foodies alike; its closing is the end of an era. Because of the generosity of Ariane Batterberry, the library she and her late husband collected will be accessible to scholars and students for the future.”
