FTD is an educational publishing company in Sao Paulo, Brazil, founded in 1902 to support schools run by the Maristas Brothers throughout the country.

The Marist Province of South-Central Brazil (PMBCS), which includes Goiás, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina, and the Distrito Federal, runs many businesses. FTD operates its main office, publishing house, printing plant, nine branches, fourteen distributors, and nineteen service houses out of several buildings.

FTD specializes in a wide range of textbooks and learning materials, from pre-school to technical training at middle school level (with FTDtec) to training courses for illiterate adults, as well as literature, atlases and dictionaries.

FTD also operate a number of educational online resources. In@ction provides English language resources, and Porta Alberta covers sciences, history and geography.

FTD also own sales outlets across the country.

Key Company Developments 2013

Financial, Internal Organization:

In 2012, FTD Editora reported negative growth (404 million BRL, against 424 million BRL in 2011), and almost halved profits (36 million BRL, down from 69 million BRL in 2011) for the first time in years, due to budget cuts from the Brazilian Government for public schools in 2012. Other publishing companies in the education market were impacted as well.

Ownership, Mergers & Acquisition, Internal Organization:

A major reshuffle in management occurred in 2010 (with the creation of the position of a CEO, and followed up in 2011). In 2012 additional internal organization changes occurred with the creation of the Product Management Department and the Digital Media Department.

Digital:

FTD operates a number of online learning resources to disseminate its learning materials to specific target audiences. In 2013, it launched its first complete educational collection of digital educational materials, a work on Brazilian history and society, via iTunes.

In the national tender for educational books (PNLD) in 2012, for school year 2013, FTD had 21 titles approved, more than any of its competitors.
