Sales of adult trade books fell 7.8% in November compared to November 2013, while sales in the children/young adult segment rose 14.1%, according to AAP’s StatShot statistics program. The decline in adult trade was due to a 24.6% drop in hardcover sales and a 0.6% decline in e-book sales which offset gains in the trade paperback and mass market segments.
The gain in the children/ya category was led by a 39.5% increase in paperback sales which offset a 27.9% decline in e-book sales.
Through the first 11 months of 2014 sales in the adult trade segment fell 1.4% compared to the same period in 2013 with sales down in hardcover and mass market paperback and up in trade paperback. E-book sales were virtually flat at $1.17 billion. Sales in the children/ya segment were up 20.7% led by a 39.1% increase in e-book sales to $213.5 million.
For all the 1,209 publishers that report sales to the AAP, sales were up 2.2% in November and 5.3% in the year-to-date.
