Barnes & Noble announced Thursday that Scott Cowen, president of Tulane University, has been elected to its board of directors. Cowen’s election follows word that Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei will step down from the B&N board following the sale of most of Liberty’s shares in the company.

In a prepared comment, B&N chairman Len Riggio said Cowen “brings a broad range of experience to the board on the educational front as well as substantial experience having served on both public and private company boards.”

According to B&N, Cowen’s areas of scholarship and teaching focus on strategic financial management systems, corporate governance and leadership. In addition to consulting for dozens of companies, Cowen is currently a board member of Newell Rubbermaid, Inc. and Forest City Enterprises.
