The National Book Foundation has announced that Harold Augenbraum, its longtime executive director, will be stepping down in March. The Foundation’s board has formed a search committee and chosen an executive search firm, Spencer Stuart, to steer the hunt for a new executive director.
“I have very much enjoyed my time here at the Foundation,” said Augenbraum. “But it’s time for me to seek new challenges in my professional life and for new leadership at the Foundation as it looks toward the future.”
Augenbraum has headed the foundation since 2004, and according to the NBF, is credited with re-vitalizing the National Book Awards, the foundation's most prominent program. Augenbraum also developed the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community; 5 Under 35, after-school reading program BookUp; and the Innovations in Reading prize.
“We owe a great debt to Harold for his exceptional service and countless contributions to the Foundation and its mission,” added David Steinberger, CEO of The Perseus Books Group, and chairman of the National Book Foundation. “We respect his decision, and look forward to working closely with him on a carefully crafted transition process that will position the Foundation for the future.”
