Simon & Schuster has appointed Jonathan Karp president and publisher of its adult publishing group, effective immediately.
In this new role, Karp will oversee S&S’s New York-based adult publishing groups (and their associated sub-imprints): Atria Books, Gallery Books, Scribner, Simon & Schuster and Touchstone. Karp, who will retain his tole as publisher of the S&S imprint, will now report to S&S president and CEO Carolyn Reidy.
Reidy, speaking to the appointment, said Karp is "well suited and more than ready to take on this greater responsibility.” She went on to note that Karp's division has "consistently yielded strong annual profits" and that he has, at S&S, fostered "a team-oriented and inclusive work environment in which initiative and creativity are value." She also noted that he has consistently published "both longtime and newly acquired authors across a great range of publishing categories.”
The list of authors published under Karp at S&S is a long one, and includes Mary Higgins Clark, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Walter Isaacson, David McCullough, Bob Woodward, Tom Brady, Stephen Colbert, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, John Irving, and Bruce Springsteen.
Karp said he is looking forward to bringing his collaborative approach to the entire S&S adult group. “I look forward to continuing to work with Carolyn, and to collaborating with our highly accomplished publishers in each of our distinct yet complementary imprints,” he said.
This promotion comes a little more than a month after Atria Books’ publisher, Judith Curr, abruptly left the company. An S&S spokesperson said the publisher still intends to find a replacement for Curr.
