George Witte has been promoted to senior v-p and editor-in-chief of the St. Martin's Publishing Group, effective immediately, SMPG executive v-p and publisher Jennifer Enderlin wrote in a letter to staff on Friday.
Witte began his career at St. Martin's Press in 1984 as an editorial assistant to then CEO and editorial director Tom McCormack, and became editorial director of the newly launched line of Picador USA in 1994. Five years later, Witte took on the role of v-p and editor-in-chief of St. Martin's Press, and in that capacity has edited and published such books as The Threat by Andrew McCabe; With All Due Respect by Nikki Haley; Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, which is being adapted to film; and SMPG's first Oprah Book Club selection, The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton.
"George's steadfast equanimity, his unwavering integrity, his wry humor, his ability to 'call it like he sees it,"'and his love of books and this business are what makes him so valuable to me, and to SMPG as a whole," Enderlin wrote.
