Bookstore Sales Rebound In September
After falling for three consecutive months, bookstore sales hit $1.3 billion in September, a 6.3% increase over the same month last year, according to preliminary estimates released Nov. 20 by the Census Bureau. Despite the September rebound, bookstore sales for the first nine months of 2013 were down 1.5% over the same period last year, at $10.1 billion.
Fiscal 2013 Results Up at Courier
Total revenue at Courier Corp. hit $275 million for the fiscal year ended Sept. 28, up 5% over the previous year—led by a 6% increase in sales in its manufacturing segment. Net income increased to $11.2 million from $9.2 million in fiscal 2012. Sales in Courier’s publishing segment fell 2%, to $37.6 million, but its operating loss was cut to $2.1 million from $4.4 million.
