BAM Has Flat Quarter, Adds HBG Site
Books-A-Million revenue inched up to $103.8 million in the first quarter, which ended May 3, 2014—a 0.2% gain compared to the year-earlier period. Comp sales in the quarter fell 2.5%. The net loss rose to $5.6 million, from $3.7 million in the first three months of 2013. The retailer announced that it has also created a dedicated site for Hachette titles.
Maya Angelou Dies at Age 86
Author and activist Maya Angelou died at her home in North Carolina on May 28. She was 86. Best known for her first book, the 1969 autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 2011 by President Obama.
Publisher Oscar Dystel Passes Away at 101
Publishing legend Oscar Dystel, an early pioneer of mass market paperbacks and one-time CEO of Bantam Books, passed away recently at the age of 101. He is survived by his daughter, literary agent Jane Dystel.
