In a statement on the group's website, the Authors Guild has committed to maintaining "vigilance in these 'not normal' times," calling the current political climate a period"when writers have a particularly important role to play" in the preservation of democracy.
Asserting that the Guild is and has always been a nonpartisan organization that does not endorse candidates for election, the statement nonetheless condemns the recent executive order issued by President Donald J. Trump banning travel from seven Muslim countries. The statement also pledges the Guild to fight against the rumored dissolution of federal arts agencies including the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
"The Authors Guild will not countenance impediment to the free flow of information," the statement reads. "We will not remain silent in the face of attacks on free expression and freedom of movement."
