In February, we ran a listing of the country’s largest publishers ranked by print units sold through outlets that report to NPD BookScan. While that approach has its limitations (it doesn’t include e-book sales or sales at outlets that don’t report to BookScan), it does provide a look at how the largest trade publishers below the Big Five stack up. Now, NPD has put together a list that includes e-book sales from its PubTrack Digital service, which aggregates e-book unit sales supplied by more than 450 publishers, including the Big Five.
With the addition of e-books, the order of the largest eight publishers was the same as in the print-only ranking—including the three publishers below the top five: Scholastic, Disney, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kensington, which has a large e-book program, took over the ninth spot, followed by Workman. But not all the publishers who are on the print-only list supply e-books sales to PubTrack, including Sterling Publishing and John Wiley & Sons (in 10th and 11th place on the print list), which may affect the ordering.
