Margot Atwell will step down as executive director and publisher of the Feminist Press at CUNY in February 2025. The press's board of directors has begun a nationwide search for her replacement.
Atwell joined FP in early 2022, having previously served as director of outreach and international for Kickstarter. Prior to that, she was publisher of the independent press Beaufort Books.
During her three-years at FP, Atwell acquired and edited a dozen books, and successfully led FP's first-ever crowdfunding campaigns, per a release announcing her departure. She also shored up the press's "administrative foundations" and enhanced employee benefits.
“Margot used her attention to detail and sharp organizational skills to oversee a major overhaul of a number of aspects of the press,” said Linda Villarosa, chair of FP’s board of directors, in a statement. “She modernized systems while also selecting and editing a number of well-received books. We wish her well on her future endeavors.”
"It has been an incredible honor and privilege to lead Feminist Press for the past three years, nurturing, publishing, and celebrating writing from marginalized and insurgent voices and working to build a more just future for everyone," said Atwell wrote in her newsletter, adding that she would continue to edit select projects for the publisher. "I’m truly excited to see what the next leader of Feminist Press will accomplish, and will be cheering them on as they carry forward this work, which is more necessary than ever.”
