Chalice Press has acquired a book by United Methodist pastor Frank Shaefer, who was defrocked in December for officiating at his gay son’s marriage six years ago. He was tried by the United Methodist Church, the largest American mainline Protestant denomination; the Church court offered Schaefer the opportunity to continue in ministry if he promised to never again officiate at a same-sex marriage. He refused and was stripped of his ordination.
Now a speaker and activist on behalf of LGBTQ rights, Schaefer has appeared on The View, MSNBC, the CBS Evening News, and CNN. Three of his four children are gay.
Chalice Press, an imprint of the publishing arm of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), plans a release in the first half of 2014. A documentary film, An Act of Love, is in the works; the filmmakers are seeking funding on Kickstarter.
