Dan Brown’s Inferno held onto the top-selling spots on June’s international bestseller fiction lists in a host of European markets, including Germany, France, and Sweden.
He’s Back, a satirical novel that speculates on what would happen if Hitler was at large in 21st-century Berlin and garnered much attention upon release, beat out last month’s #2 in Germany, Beastly Things, a crime thriller in Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti series. Atlantic Monthly Press released Beastly Things in the U.S. last year.
France is the only European country reporting Fifty Shades of Grey in one of the top three spots. But other countries have responded to the trilogy’s worldwide success with the emergence of new erotica authors in their respective markets. American Sylvia Day’s third installment of her Crossfire series, Entwined with You, which centers on an intense romance between two people with violent pasts and “obsessive desires,” appears on the Spanish, Dutch, and Italian lists. Her second book, Reflected in You, appears on the Swedish list at #10. Penguin published Entwined with You stateside in June.
On the nonfiction side, 1913 held its place in Germany’s #2 spot. In the book, journalist Florian Illies takes an in-depth look at a year when two centuries collided and one world war broke out. U.K. publisher Clerkenwell Press’s English translation published July 18.
In Sweden, TV personality Per Morberg (known for his role as Joakim Wersén in the Swedish crime drama Beck) snagged the #1 spot with Morberg Barbecues, a cookery book. He beat out last month’s bestseller, In My Body, a blog-turned-book about author Kristian Gidlund’s struggle with cancer.
