In the waning weeks of summer, debut titles began to populate the top spots on the international bestseller lists. Although a few mainstay titles, like Dan Brown’s Inferno, held on for the month of August, several new releases fared well in the foreign markets last month.
Titles new to the list dominated the top three spots on the French fiction chart. The third book of Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series, Entwined with You (published by Berkley in the U.S.), debuted at #1. Day’s book was followed by Belgian novelist Amélie Nothomb’s new title, The Happy Nostalgia, which landed at #2. Albin Michel announced a 200,000 print run for the Belgian writer’s 22nd novel, which is described as an autobiographical narration of her childhood in Japan. At #3 was French journalist Jean d’Ormesson’s One Day I Will Go Without Being Told Everything.
In the Netherlands, Jens Olde Kalter’s biography of Badr Hari, the Moroccan-Dutch super heavyweight kickboxer, made its first appearance on the country’s combined bestseller list at #1. American novelists held the next two spots, with Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed landing at #2 and Brown’s Inferno coming in at #3. Yet another debut—Simone van der Vlugt’s thriller about the disappearance of a child, Tomorrow I’m Back Home—landed at #4
In Germany, Timur Vermes’s satire that ponders what would happen if Hitler were at-large in 21st-century Berlin, He’s Back, climbed from #3 to #1 on the fiction list. But, again, a handful of new titles appeared on the top half of the list, including Daniel Kehlmann’s story of three brothers, F, at #3, and American novelist Karen Slaughter’s Fallen, debuting at #4.
