In December, Swedish author Jonas Jonasson had the top-selling fiction title in two international markets. The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden was the bestselling novel in his native country and Germany (stateside, Ecco will be publishing The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden this April). Also in Germany, Sebastian Fitzek debuted at #2 with Noah, the Berlin-based author’s 11th thriller, and the first one to be released by his new publishing house, Bastei Lübbe.
While Stephen King’s Dr. Sleep held firm in the #2 spot on Spain’s fiction chart in December, Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s The Patient Sniper grabbed the top spot. The novel follows a writer who is on the trail of Sniper, an anonymous, Bansky-like graffiti artist who comes within a “whisker of illegality.” No one knows his whereabouts or has seen his face, and the search for the elusive artist takes the reader from Madrid to Lisbon, Verona, and Naples.
Though Spain’s #1 nonfiction title, Javier Ikaz and Jorge Díaz’s I Went to EGB, climbed up from #9, there were many new titles in the most recent Spanish nonfiction bestseller list. Debuts included We Are Not Crazy by Spanish humorist and actor Gran Wyoming, at #2, and Belen Esteban’s Ambitions and Reflections at #3.
In Sweden, The Guinness World Records 2014 ousted the previous #1 nonfiction title, Sven-Göran Eriksson and Stefan Lövgren’s Svennis, which fell to #2 in the most recent list.
In Germany, fashion designer Guido M. Kretschmer’s style manual, Attraction, was, once again, at #1 on the nonfiction side. The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 by Christopher Clark maintained its spot at #2 on that list, and I Am Malala, by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb, moved up three spots to #3.
