In the face of media backlash indicating that Hillary Clinton's Hard Choices has not lived up to expectations following its June 10 release, Simon & Schuster issued a press release Tuesday asserting the book's strong sales performance worldwide. According to S&S, Hard Choices has been an "instant international bestseller" in all of the territories in which it has been published.
The publisher purported that the book, simultaneously published the week of June 10 in international markets, was an immediate bestseller in the U.K, Australia, India, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and France.
“We can think of no other recent book written by an American leader to receive such an enthusiastic international reception,” said Jonathan Karp, president and publisher of S&S.
The book sold roughly 85,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week on sale, according to Nielsen BookScan.
Hard Choices, per S&S, was #2 on the Sunday Times bestseller list in the U.K., and has also appeared high on the top ten state and regional bestseller lists in Australia. The publisher said the memoir was a #1 bestseller in Canada, and even accounting for only a "partial week of sales" in Germany and France, the book landed on bestseller lists in those countries. In India, Hard Choices is currently in Amazon and Flipkart’s top ten.
Clinton will be traveling to Europe in early July for appearances in the U.K., Germany and France.
