In the run up to the July 4 release of the film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars in Spain, John Green’s novel jumped four places on the country’s fiction list, landing in the top spot for June. Two new titles, The Foreign Bodies, by Lorenzo Silva, and Pact of Loyalty, by Gonzalo Giner, hit #2 and #3, respectively.
All three of the novels on France’s fiction list last month were new releases. At #1 was Jean d’Ormesson’s Like a Song of Hope, described by the publisher as a “treatise on cosmology” that turns to “the search for God.” Swedish author Camilla Läckberg came in at #2 with The Angel Maker’s Wife, and Katherine Pancol’s Muchachas, Vol. 3 sat at #3.
The VIP Room, the first installment in a new series by Jens Lapidus, was new to Sweden’s fiction list at #1—a deal for U.S. rights has not yet closed, according to the Salomonsson Agency, who represents Lapidus. Viveca Sten’s The Price of Power jumped two spots to #2, and Made in Sweden by Anders Roslund and Stefan Thunberg debuted on the chart at #3.
Turning to nonfiction, Rafael Santandreu’s The Glasses of Happiness held on to the #1 position in Spain last month. El Libro Troll by El Rubius was new to the chart at #2. Written by the Spanish YouTube phenomenon, whose real name is Rubén Doblas, the “interactive scrapbook” invites readers to “turn their life into an experiment and copy it down in the book,” according to the publisher.
In France, Travelling Absurdly, Stéphane de Groodt and Christophe Debacq’s collection of wordplay, jumped three spots to hit #1. Thomas Piketty’s international headline–making Capital in the Twenty-First Century dropped to the #2 spot on the country’s list.
