American titles hit the top of the bestseller charts across European markets in July. Diana Gabaldon’s Written in My Own Heart’s Blood came in at #1 on Germany’s fiction list. The title, the eighth in the author’s Outlander series, was published in the U.S. by Delacorte in June. Buzz around the books has picked up stateside with the hotly anticipated August 9 premiere of the Starz TV adaptation, Outlander.
The success of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars continues to grow as the film adaptation of the book premieres internationally. The novel led the combined chart in the Netherlands following the July 10 release of the movie there. Green also fared well on Italy’s combined list, coming in at #3 in the leadup to the Italian premiere of the film on September 4.
Hard Luck, the eighth book in Jeff Kinney’s wildly popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, came in at #3 in the Netherlands. Abrams released the book in the U.S. last November.
Italian novels claimed the first two spots on the country’s combined list. A Changing Truth by Gianrico Carofiglio, a short novel about a mysterious murder investigation, came out on top. Andrea Camilleri’s The Pyramid of Mud, the latest in her Inspector Montalbano series, landed at #2.
Turning to nonfiction, Equanimity, Wilhelm Schmid’s exploration of the “art of dealing with growing older,” once again hit #1 on Germany’s list. These Awfully Beautiful Years by Susanne Fröhlich and Constanze Kleis held firm at #2, and The Crash Is the Solution, Matthias Weik and Marc Friedrich’s guide to preparing for the next big financial crisis, came in at #3.
