New titles dominated the top spots on bestseller lists across international markets last month. In Germany, Martin Suter’s novel Montecristo was the new #1 title on the country’s fiction chart. Suter bumped the previous top seller, Michel Houellebecq’s controversial novel Submission, to the #2 spot. (FSG will release Submission in the U.S. No on-sale date has been set.)
Kiera Cass’s The Selection was also new to Germany’s list, debuting at #3. The book is the first in Cass’s Selection series and was released in the U.S. by HarperTeen in April 2012 (HarperTeen will be publishing the fourth title in the series, The Heir, in the U.S. on May 5).
In Spain, Milena Busquets’s This Too Shall Pass, a novel about “the complex relationship between a mother and a daughter,” per the publisher, was once again the top-selling fiction title. David Trueba’s Flash and Philip Kerr’s January Window were both new to the list at #2 and #3, respectively. Kerr’s book, a title in his Scott Manson thriller series, was published by Head of Zeus in the U.K. in October 2014.
Turning to nonfiction, Chris Kyle’s American Sniper moved up from #7 to #1 on Spain’s chart. The film adaptation of the book opened in theaters in Spain on February 20. The country’s previous top seller, Juan Carlos I: The Man Who Would Be King, by Fernando Ónega, fell to #9.
New nonfiction titles took the top three spots on the combined list in the Netherlands. The #1 spot belonged to Joris Luyendijk’s Dit kan niet waar zijn (which will be published in English this summer by the U.K.’s Guardian Faber Publishing as The Masters of the Universe: A Journey Through the Alarming World of High Finance), which delves into the world of banking and the stock exchange, recounting the recent financial crisis.
