David Lagercrantz’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which was a hot book overseas in August, continued to do well in a host of international markets in September, topping the fiction charts in Sweden—home to Stieg Larsson, the creator of the hugely popular Millennium series. Landing at #3 in fiction in Sweden last month was Killer Anders and His Friends (and the Occasional Enemy), the newest novel by Jonas Jonasson, whose two previous works, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out a Window and The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden: A Novel, were international bestsellers.
In France, The Girl in the Spider’s Web was joined on the fiction list last month by five new titles, including The Book of Baltimore by Joel Dicker, which was the top-selling novel in France at the end of September. Dicker is the author of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair: A Novel, which won a number of literary prizes in France and was published in the U.S. by Penguin.
The highest debuting book in Italy in September was After We Fell by Anna Todd, which hit #2. The novel is the third volume in Todd’s After series, and the first two titles in the series were among the top 10 sellers in Italy last month as well. Gallery Books has been publishing the After titles in the U.S.
The adult coloring-book craze showed signs of spreading worldwide in September. Although none hit the top three spots on Sweden’s nonfiction list last month, four coloring books were in the top 10, including Johanna Basford’s Enchanted Forest (#5) and Secret Garden (#10), both of which have been big sellers in the U.S.
