A number of different authors topped bestsellers lists around the world at the end of October.
JoJo Moyes closed out the month with the #1 fiction seller in Germany, After You. The follow-up to Me Before You, it was released in the U.S. in September by Pamela Dorman Books. Matilde Asensi took the top spot in fiction in Spain with The Return of Catón. Asensi has won numerous writing awards in Spain for her historical thrillers, and a couple of her books have been published in the U.S. by HarperCollins. In Italy, Niccolò Ammaniti had the #1 book at the end of October with Anna. Born in Rome, Ammaniti won the Viareggio-Repaci Prize for Fiction in 2001 for his novel I’m Not Scared, which was published in the U.S. by Random House.
Following Moyes on the fiction bestsellers list in Germany were two novels that were released late in the month. In second place was Those Who Failed by Michael Hjorth and Hans Rosenfeldt, a mystery that revolves around the murder of a media personality. Two novels that have been high on the bestsellers list in the U.S. were in the second and third spots in Spain in October: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz. Finishing second on Italy’s combined list in October was Christmas, Feast of Mercy, the annual Christmas greeting from Italian cardinal Angelo Scola.
In nonfiction, Andreas Englisch analyzes the new power structure in the Vatican under Pope Francis in The Fighter in the Vatican, which was #1 on Germany’s nonfiction list. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying-Up by Marie Kondo, a bestseller in the U.S., was #3 on the Spanish nonfiction list.
