The top five bestsellers in the Netherlands at the end of January were all new to the list. The #1 bestseller, We Have Got a Kid!, is a miniature edition of Holland’s 2016 Picture Book of the Year of the same name. A couple of quirky books landed in the fourth and fifth spots on the list: at #4 is The Man and the Wood, which, the publisher says, is “written for real and imagined lumberjacks.” Fifth place belongs to As Long As There Is Life, a follow-up to The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, a fictional diary of an 83-year-old man that was on the Dutch bestseller lists for more than a year. Grand Central has acquired U.S. rights.
The top nonfiction title in January in Spain was new to the list. The Killing of Atocha recounts the massacre that occurred in the Spanish city of Atocha in 1977, as the country was making the transition to democracy following the 1975 death of Gen. Francisco Franco. Paris-Austerlitz was the top-selling new title on the Spanish fiction list at the end of last month, having debuted at #2. The novel is by the bestselling Spanish author Rafael Chirbes, who died in August 2015. New Directions published On the Edge in the U.S. last month, the book written by Chirbes prior to Paris-Austerlitz.
Jan Weiler, a German author and journalist who has developed a large following with his humorous look at family life, saw his newest book, Teens, land in the third spot on the German fiction list after it made its debut in late January.
