Norwegian author Maja Lunde’s dystopian tale The History of Bees was the top-selling fiction title in Germany in July, the third month in a row it claimed the #1 spot. The book was published in the U.S. this month by Simon & Schuster’s Touchstone imprint. My Brilliant Friend by Italian author Elena Ferrante jumped to the second spot. Andreas Michalsen’s health guide, Healing with the Power of Nature, topped the German July nonfiction bestseller list.
In Sweden, Ferrante was also a favorite, taking the first and third spots on the fiction bestseller list with The Story of the Lost Child and Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, respectively. In between them is Top Dog, the latest standalone thriller by Jens Lapidus. Self-help business book Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson was #1 on the nonfiction list.
In Italy, Paolo Cognetti’s Strega Prize–winning novel The Eight Mountains was the country’s bestselling book in July. It will be published in the U.S. by Atria Books in March 2018. Two mysteries follow on the list: Maurizio De Giovanni’s Swallow Winter at #2 and Andrea Camilleri’s The Safety Net at #3.
Author Yuval Noah Harari had two nonfiction works hit different lists. Sapiens was #2 on the Swedish list, and his follow-up to that book, Homo Deus, was second on the German nonfiction list. Homo Deus was released in the U.S. in February by Harper.
