In Germany, Turning Point, the finale of Carmen Korn’s Century Trilogy, a historical series about four women in the 20th century, topped the fiction bestseller list in September, and prolific mystery novelist Charlotte Link was in second with The Search, about a missing teen. Pegasus Books has published several of Link’s titles in English, while Korn has yet to be translated. In third place was Swedish author Johan Jonasson’s The Accidental Adventures of the Hundred-Year-Old-Man.
Italians are enchanted by real life: A Captain, the autobiography of soccer star Francesco Totti, was #1 in late September, followed by Now Tell Me All About You, Andrea Camilleri’s autobiographical letter to his great-granddaughter. Third is M, a fictionalization of the life of Benito Mussolini by Antonio Scurati, bought in a preempt by Harper during this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair.
Eduardo Mendoza’s The King Receives was the bestselling fiction title in Spain. It begins a trilogy about the last three decades of the 20th century. Yuval Noah Harari had the first and third nonfiction bestsellers in Spain, and one of them, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, was #2 on Germany’s nonfiction list.
