Patterson Takes Off
-- 9/7/98
Richard North Patterson has shed the familiar courtroom settings that have figured so prominently in his previous bestsellers and entered the political arena with his latest novel, No Safe Place. Set in the year 2000, it follows a New Jersey senator in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. Knopf launched the book on August 26 with an initial printing of 310,000, and has since gone back for subsequent printings of 10,000 and 15,000 copies. Currently out on a national tour, Patterson has been profiled in various publications, including George magazine, and interviews are scheduled on Good Morning America and CNN Morning News. Not wanting to miss out on all the fun, PW ran a profile of its own in its July 6 issue, but was one-upped by Entertainment Weekly, which offered a more revealing look at the author in its September 4 issue -- the writer sheds his shirt for a photo that accompanies the magazine's lead review, headlined "Scandal Power." Can a topless photo help the sales of a book? "Since the photo's not printed on the actual book, it's difficult to say," said Knopf's Nicholas Latimer. "But you never know. If it works for Fabio, it could work for Ric, too."
