    Looking to utilize its network of printing facilities in different parts of the world, Ingram Content Group has launched Global Connect, a new program that will allow publishers in any country to print and distribute titles in countries where Ingram has its own operations as well as in countries of one of its partners. To that end, Ingram has signed an agreement with Singular Digital, a leading book manufacturer in Brazil, to become its first Global Connect partner.

  • CPSIA Amendment Excluding Ordinary Children's Books Signed into Law

    On Friday, President Obama signed into law an amendment to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 that excludes "ordinary" children's books from the law’s third-party testing and certification provisions, and promises to make testing less burdensome for novelty and book-plus publishers.

    What should first print runs be for frontlist titles this fall? Publishers are struggling mightily with this question, given the growth of e-book sales and the decline of print. With units of print sales down 10.2% in the first half of 2011, per Nielsen BookScan figures reported in PW last week, the question for the fall is not if first printings will be cut, but by how much.

    Last week, the Book Industry Environmental Council (BIEC) held a webinar outlining the recommendations of three newly-released guides to reducing carbon emissions, developed in cooperation with the Green Press Initiative. Based on a GPI report published in 2008, the guides set specific goals and ways to reach them in three industry sectors: publishers, printers, and paper manufacturers.

  • Edwards Brothers Forms Global Printing Network

    Ann Arbor-based Edwards Brothers has teamed with printers in Europe, Australia and Asia to form a network that offers publishers a one-stop printing service to meet their global printing requirements. The goal of gps Global Print Solutions is it “help publishers handle their small order worldwide runs cost effectively," said Edwards Brothers CEO John Edwards. Joining Edwards Brothers, which will cover North and South America, are CPI, covering Europe and Africa; Markono Print Media, covering Asia; and Griffin Press, covering Australia.

  • Perseus Signs with Quark for Digital Publishing

    As publishers look for ways to streamline the production process, the Perseus Books Group has entered into an agreement with Quark to implement a new publishing software system that will allow for the creation of print and digital books. The new software system will give Perseus the ability to create a single-source document that can be delivered across multiple types of media. The original book file is created in an e-book compatible format that can be exported to the Web, social media and mobile devices without the need for further conversion.

  • O'Reilly to Use CoreSource for Digital Distribution, Management

    O'Reilly Media has signed with Ingram Content Group to use Ingram's CoreSource platform for digital asset management and distribution. The agreement is the latest deal between the two companies; in April '’Reilly and Ingram struck an agreement under which Ingram will manage most of O'Reilly's print inventory.

  • On Demand, SharedBook Ink Printing, Distribution Deal

    On Demand Books, producer of the Expresso Book Machine, an in-store POD device, has reached an agreement with SharedBook, a customized book producing firm, to print and distribute content from SharedBook imprints, AcademicPub.com and Everything2Print.com, through EBM’s ExpressNet sales channel.

  • Traditional Book Output Up 5%; Nontraditional Soars

    Despite the belief in many quarters that the growth of e-books will mean the death of the printed book, the number of books produced by traditional publishers rose 5% in 2010, to a projected 316,480, according to preliminary figures released Wednesday morning from R. R. Bowker.

    When New York magazine announced that Funny or Die, the online comedy brand founded by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay known for its brief viral videos, was launching its own book imprint, it described one of the people behind the deal as a " ‘cross platform consultant.'

  • Harper, Donnelley in Wide Ranging Supply Chain Deal

    HarperCollins and R.R. Donnelley have reached a comprehensive agreement that will significantly alter HC's approach to the supply chain. Under the agreement, Donnelley, the longtime printer for the majority of HC titles, will now also fulfill and ship orders for new books for all of HC's U.S. divisions, including Zondervan. In addition, Donnelley will serve as HC's print-on-demand supplier in global markets. HC said the new arrangement, which will start to be phased in this fall, will lower costs and increase speed to market. As a result of the change, HC will close two of its four U.S. warehouses.

  • Book Industry Environmental Council Seeks Survey Respondents

    The Book Industry Environmental Council is conducting surveys to track the environmental progress of the book industry and is asking publishers, printers and paper manufacturers to participate in short surveys.

  • Distribution: Midpoint Expands Into Christian Market; Square One Changes Canadian Rep

    Midpoint Trade Books and Inspirational Marketing Resources have formed a new entity, Covenant Media Resources (CMR), where Christian publishers will be able to access Midpoint's distribution and sales services. CMR president Chris Robinette said, "Midpoint is a premier trade sales and distribution company with many services that will be appealing to many independent Christian book publishers.

  • New Digital Service from eLibraryPlus.com

    A new service that integrates e-book development, distribution and marketing for academic content has been launched by eLibraryPlus.com. The new service will convert and make content combatable with a range of digital reading devices and also allow publishers to distribute sample, abridged or complete versions of their books by different formats and devices. The service is being powered by Datamatics Global Services, a global provider of information technology, knowledge process outsourcing and consulting services.

  • Print China 2011: Bigger and Busier

    The choice of Guangdong Province as the location for the Print China exhibition is no accident. The province, which has the highest GDP in China, accounts for one-third of the nation’s printing industry.
