  • Obituary: Carolyn Forsman

    Carolyn Forsman, former librarian and advocate for free speech, died January 19 at the age of 69. According to the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, she raised more than $150,000 for free expression groups, mainly through designing jewelry and creating pieces that celebrated the freedom to read, including her well-known "I Read Banned Books" bracelet. In 2011, Forsman began donating to ABFFE 10 per cent of her sales to independent bookstores. A memorial service will be held in the spring.  Memorial contributions may be made to FTRF, www.ftrf.org, and the Cancer Research Institute, www.cancerresearch.com.

    Emma D. Dryden, founder of drydenbks LLC and former v-p, publisher at Simon & Schuster, has joined Month9Books, a publisher of speculative fiction for teens and tweens, as an advisor to publisher Georgia McBride.

  • Authors on the Air January 31, 2013: Matthew Guerrieri

    Matthew Guerrieri, who recently wrote a feature for PW for his book The First Four Notes: Beethoven's Fifth and the Human Imagination, will be on The Colbert Report.

  • Job Moves: January 31, 2013

    Hannah Rahill will leave Weldon Owen Publishing after 18 years as its food and drink publisher to explore new opportunities. Rahill worked on developing the cookbook publishing program and contributed to the publication of over 300 titles. Executive editor Jennifer Newens and associate publisher Amy Marr will now oversee food and drink.

    Scott Parris will join the editorial team at Oxford University Press USA as executive editor for economics. He has spent two decades as executive editor for economics at Cambridge University Press.

  • Harrison Named E-I-C at Scribner

    Colin Harrison has been promoted to v-p and editor-in-chief at Scribner. Harrison, who was a senior editor, has been at the Simon & Schuster imprint for 11 years.

  • Job Moves: January 30, 2013

    Dennis Lee has been promoted to director of business management. Since 2009, he has been a business manager at Penguin, overseeing the budgets and P&Ls of many hardcover and trade imprints. Prior to Penguin, he spent six years at Simon and Schuster as a financial analyst and an associate business manager.

    Anthony Gosling has been named director of sales at Crossway.

    Rob Birkhead has been named v-p, client development and creative strategy.

    Iain Morris has been named v-p of creative at Cameron + Company. He has held positions at DK Publishing, LucasFilm Licensing, and Charles Schulz.

  • Former ICM Chief Starts New Agency

    Jeffrey Berg, who ran ICM for over 20 years, has started a new full service agency called Resolution which will have offices in Los Angeles and New York. Jeff Franklin, an entrepreneur and film producer, is COO.

  • Firebrand Announces New Hires

    Firebrand Technologies, provider of NetGalley, has announced that Steve Rutberg is director of marketing and sales. He has worked for WoltersKluwer Health, Taylor & Francis, and McGraw-Hill. Annie Johnston has been named content services specialist. She is formerly the digital content manager at Independent Publishers Group. Stuart Evers is now U.K. community manager, based in London. He is a former bookseller and editor. Lastly, Steve Manes has been appointed to the development team. He was formerly with the Children's Health Fund.

    Margot Atwell is leaving Beufort Books as publisher, as of January 31. Beaufort president Eric Kampmann will be taking over as publisher.

    Heather Hust Rivera has been named director, communications, Disney Publishing. Most recently, she was the director of corporate communications at the Walt Disney Company.

    Amy Achaibou has been promoted to associate design manager, new format development at Chronicle Books.

    At Ballantine, Mark Tavani has been promoted to v-p, and remains an editorial director; Kara Cesare has been promoted to v-p and remains an executive editor; Junessa Viloria has been promoted to editor; Ratna Kamath has been promoted to assistant editor.
